REVIEW: Coffee Talk Episode 2: Butterfly and Hibiscus
A Heartwarming Brew of Diversity and Friendship
Toge Productions serves up a delightful sequel, Coffee Talk Episode 2: Butterfly and Hibiscus, inviting players to step back into the role of the enigmatic yet caring café bartender from the first game. Set in the cozy nighttime-only titular coffee shop, Coffee Talk, the story continues shortly after the events of the original game and weaves a rich tapestry of love, diversity, friendship, loyalty, race relations, and equality.
Playable on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG, this visual novel excels in its exploration of complex themes, making it an insightful and engaging journey for players.
Do Good:
Although visual novels cater to a specific niche, Coffee Talk Episode 2 captures the essence of heart-to-heart conversations that organically unfold over warm beverages. Set against the backdrop of a parallel Seattle, the game dives deep into issues of race and civil rights, showcasing authentic interactions between characters from diverse backgrounds.
Do No Harm:
The game's visual novel format may limit player choices, but it offers a unique opportunity to witness private and confidential conversations where characters expose their prejudices and vulnerabilities. By focusing on race and the tensions that arise between visitors to the coffee shop, Coffee Talk Episode 2 encourages empathy and understanding.
Strive to Grow:
Coffee Talk Episode 2 serves as a poignant allegory for the Christian community. The game beautifully illustrates how the Kingdom of Heaven could resemble the warm, welcoming environment of Coffee Talk, fostering unique friendships and a sense of belonging among its diverse patrons.
Experience:
I spent 10 delightful hours playing Coffee Talk Episode 2 and enjoyed every moment. The game exudes warmth, charm, and an irresistible allure, making it difficult to put down. With its soothing, comforting atmosphere, Coffee Talk Episode 2 envelops players in a world that feels both familiar and enchanting.
The sequel builds on the strengths of the original game, offering an even more immersive experience with its superb music, captivating art style, and emotionally resonant character-driven narrative. If you were a fan of the first game, don't hesitate to dive into this engaging follow-up. If you're new to the series but enjoy visual novels or lo-fi music, consider playing the original game first to avoid spoilers and fully appreciate the unfolding story.
Remember - it doesn’t matter if you’re a video game-designing orc, an alien in a spacesuit, or a banshee longing to share her voice…
I finally (mostly) finished playing through the first episode of Coffee Talk. I remember picking it up a little while back after hearing about the series creator's untimely passing and hearing how much you'd talked it up. Since then, it's definitely made its way onto my list of favorite games I've played.
I'm really excited to pick up with Episode 2 soon -- the fact that it took you about 10 hours to complete vs. the four hours or so I put into the original tells me there's a good deal more to do in this episode, which is really exciting because I kept wanting more of what I got out of Ep 1.
Guess I'm lucky to have picked this up when I did! Excited to play this soon 👍
